Bite Registration

Most important parts of denture construction

Wax Occlusion rims

During bite/occlusal registration- Check these

Custom Impressions– check

If they are not correct take- wash impressions of bite plate

Occlusal Plane

  • Check frontal plane- parallel to the bi pupillary line
  • Fox plane-Occlusion plane- Parallel to the Campers plane

Lip Support

Upper lip-Aesthetics

  • With the lip at rest, the amount of tooth or rim visible is used to determine the vertical height of the occlusal plane.
  • Lips should be unstrained.
  • Naso-labial angle ≈ 90°.
  • Philtrum depressed.
  • Vermilion border showing.

Lower lip-support

  • A useful check is to ask the patient to pronounce the letter ‘E’, which pulls the lower lip against the labial aspect of the rim.
  • Then check the Tissue Support-Facial features.
  • Facial features set the selection of height and width of anterior teeth.

Phonetics

  • When ‘F’is pronounced, the incisal edge of the maxillary incisors should just touch the wet–dry border of the lower lip.
  • A useful check is to ask the patient to pronounce the letter ‘E’, which pulls the lower lip against the labial aspect of the rim.

Centre Line

Central line is determined by Philtrum (Not nose)

Canine lines

Canine line is dictated by the nose. The canine should not go past this line

Lip Lines

  • Mark the high lip line and lower lip lineMark the high lip line and lower lip line.
  • The upper occlusal rim anteriorly recommended to be 1-2 mm below the lip line at rest (anterior lip line).

Teeth setup

Vertical Dimension

Posteriorly, the occlusion rim intersects 1/2 – 2/3 up the retromolar pad

Then Check RVD, OVD and Free way space-using Willis gauge.

Free way space is the distance between the maxillary and mandibular occlusal surfaces when the mandible is in physiologic resting position (not biting)

Mark the posterior part of the upper and lower rims when the patient’s mouth is closed.

Let the patient open and close and move the tongue to make sure the mark is reproducible.

Then remove both rims and make the cutouts to make space for the bite registration space and place both rims back into the patient’s mouth. Place the paste and have the patient close the mouth and let the paste set in. Remove the both rims en-bloc.
